What is Hontate Shoinai dyeing?

This is an ancient Japanese indigo dyeing method in which "sukumo," a dye made from fermented indigo plant leaves containing blue pigment, is fermented again using only "lye" extracted from wood ashes such as those from broad-leaved trees to create the dye solution.
